A comment on comments

Hi Everyone,
I know there are some of you out there reading this. 'HEY'!
I just wanted to let you know, in case you thought I was really modest or something, that I like getting comments on my blog. So, comment!

You might think this is shameful but as I reminded Melissa the other day, I'm a Jew. Shame and guilt are what we do best.

I mean, if you can't comment, or are afraid to because this blog is so well written you think that your comment will just make you look stupid, I understand.

I mean, I comment on all of your blogs...

But it's fine.

Whatever.

Have a good night!!
Love,
Becky E.

Things I like about Leprechauns

I don't really think about leprechauns too much. But this morning I did. It was kind of weird. I woke up, probably thought along the lines 'ow. can't open eyes. why is this so. painful. ow.?', rolled over and then thought 'leprechauns. that would be. ow. stupid eyes. funny to blog about. ow.'

Did you follow that train of thought?
*Note* If you've been missing my 'Things that I'm thinking' entries, don't worry. I'm sure that pretty soon, like maybe tomorrow, that I'll be too lazy to write a REAL entry and I'll revert back to using my thoughts as subject matter.

So, anyway, as you know, when I write about things I write about why I 'like' them or 'don't like' them. Well, which is it? Do I like leprechauns or do I not like them?

Things I like about leprechauns

1) Motivational. Sometimes, if you're like me, you might say one thing and then do another. You might SAY that you want to be healthy and then go out and buy 5 pounds of candy. You might try to "be more honest with people" while you're g-chatting with people about how you can't stand so-and-so, and how you wish they would just shutup and get over themselves already...when you're going to meet so-and-so for lunch in 10 minutes. I have ideas but I don't have motivation to see them through. I'm lazy.
Well, leprechauns aren 't lazy. They don't do shiz like that. They know what they want and they go for it. They're honest about not being honest. They want the gold at the end of the rainbow and you know what? They're going to get it! And if they have to cut you, they have to cut you.

2) Snazzy dressers. I really like the color green. Like, REALLY like it. My sheets are green (well one set is at least. I have more than one set people! Come on!) And I have some green shirts, and I have a green highlighter on my desk at work. Well it's not really green...it's kind of star-shaped and has pink, orange, yellow, blue and GREEN color options. The blue is really dry though. Anyone else notice that?
Whatever.
Point is that I like green a lot. So I like that leprechauns sport green, as a rule.

3) They're entrepreneurs. Well, when you make a lot of money, or find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, what do you do with it? Spend it on clothes or shoes? I mean, that's what I would do...
Actually, that's what I did this morning and I don't even make a lot of money.
Want to see my new dress?!

Anyway, leprechauns who have a lot of money have marketed themselves and I appreciate that. Take for instance, Lucky Charms, Notre Dame football and the 'Leprechaun' movie series. Some smart leprechauns were behind those marketing moves. And think about the millions and billions of dollars that have come from all three of those enterprises.

4) Have helped to erase Irish stereotypes.

Oh wait. That's not true at all. Actually...geez. Sucks to be Irish, right?
No wonder they fight and drink all the time.

5) They like rainbows. I really like rainbows too! I always have. Well, not ALWAYS but at least since I learned about ROY G. BV. Well, Leprechauns are all about rainbows and therefore I'm all about leprechauns.
YAY for Lucky Charms! And YAY for Notre Dame. Well...maybe not for Notre Dame. I don't really like football.

Things I like about friends

I have some really great friends. No really, I do. In fact, they're probably a lot cooler and a lot better and a lot more smarter then your friends. See how I said 'a lot more smarter' and 'then' instead of 'than'? So clever am I.

"So too are you wise, young Skywalker"-says Yoda.

Anyway, I really like my friends. I've written about some of them in here. But what about the friends that I haven't written about? Don't they matter too?!

Eh.

I mean, 'YES! YES THEY DO!"

So here's to you, friends!

Things I like about friends

1) They come in all shapes and sizes. I like variety. Variety is the spice of life, they say. So it's great that friends, in particular MY friends , are all different. They come from lands filled with mountains, or vast desert countries. They wear glasses or don't have eyes at all. Some are tall, some are short. Some are funny, some are quiet. All of my friends are different and special. Like snowflakes...
You dig? I do!

2) They're caring. I'm a very caring person. I like to draw people pictures and I offer sick people Vitamin C. Actually, I kind of offer anyone who stops by my desk Vitamin C. I'm a bit of a pusher...
Anyway, enough about me. I care a lot about people. So, I like that friends, or in particular MY friends, are caring also. They ask me how my day is going, they remember my birthday and stories that I've told them before. It means a lot to me.

3) They're funny. I think everyone knows by now that I love humor. I might not be funny...in fact, I'm probably not. But that doesn't lessen my love of funny things. Well, my friends are funny. We giggle a lot. We talk about things that don't matter and remember crazy things that have happened to us (like that time, guys, when we were leaving TDR and hot, STATUE Peter was in front of us! And he totally heard us talking about him!! Or, the time when someone cradled a bottle of Malibu like a baby. Or when I tried to clean up spilled alcohol with a hair brush!!). It's fun and they're funny and I love them!

4) They're on 7 days, every week, on pretty much every network.
Oh wait...
wrong 'Friends'.
You knew that was coming. Don't even roll your eyes. I said DON'T as in DO NOT.
Gosh!

I hope I don't get sued for using this picture. Just don't say anything...

5) They entertain me. Sometimes, I watch feathers float by and it entertains me (mostly when I'm outside, in my nikes, with my briefcase and my chocolates-mmm). Other times, I listen to music and it makes the minutes go by a little faster. Or, I read to keep myself amused (note-I don't really read. I just like to say that I do because I think it makes me seem smart).

But, sometimes, and other times, those things aren't enough. That's where my friends come in. Sharing stories or jokes with me. Spinning me around on the dance floor. Pounding shots at the bar (after I turned 21 of course!) with me. They're so good at entertaining me, and more importantly, sharing in fun moments with me :D

6) They teach me things. Yeah...I like learning. I mean, up until last summer, I was pretty much in school all the time. Going to classes, lugging books back and forth from the library to my apartment, making flash cards etc. Well, more than learning from books or powerpoint slides, I like learning from people. And, as it just so happens, I happen to know a really lot of smart people. I might even call these smart people my 'friends'. I like that these 'friends' that I have are smart and are able to teach me things. Their life lessons on drinking and doodling and baseball and office gossip and grammar (yeah not friends with that kid anymore...hence the lack of commas in this sentence) have made me a better person. Which in turn has made me a better friend to them. See? You thought it was all about me. Well, you're benefiting too!

7) They share with me. Like how that one time Erin let me use her cheddar cheese for my mini pita pizza at lunch. Or how that other time, Michelle let me come to Ecuador and stay with her family and drink her DELICIOUS chocolate milk. Or that other time how Alex lent me a nail file in AP Statistics class. Or how that other time [your name] lent me/gave me/let me borrow [insert item name]. That was so nice of [your name]! Thanks so much for being my friend.

But in all seriousness,
No seriously,
I have some of the best friends in the entire world. I'm glad to know all of you.

"Maybe mistakes are what make our fate... without them what would shape our lives? Maybe if we had never veered off course we wouldn't fall in love, have babies, or be who we are. After all, things change, so do cities, people come into your life and they go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart... and if you're very lucky, a plane ride away”
--Sex And The City

I realize some of you probably think that quote's lame. But it just made my heart grow 2.3x, and my ovaries burst with happiness. So, get over it.

LYLAS!

An addendum

Hello Everyone! Sorry I was too "busy" to write an entry today.
Hehehe. I wasn't too busy...just too lazy!
Anyway, I wanted to say 'HI' to Gabe who pointed out to me that Michael Jordan actually never owned the Washington Wizards (I mentioned him in my last blog entry....and said that he had owned the team. Gosh! Don't you people pay attention to anything?!)...
Awkward. I could have SWORN that my brother, Josh, said something to me about that one time.

Well, now you know. I'm full of p-o-o-p (sorry, I'm trying not to say bad words as much...now that I'm a mother and all. No I'm not REALLY a mother. Just on facebook. Gosh! Don't you people pay attention to anything?! But seriously. If you're interested in playing with my daughter, Jewish E. _____, on facebook let me know and I'll invite you to be a relative).

Have a good day!

Things I like about Wizards

For some reason, over the past few days, I've been mentioning wizards a lot. It's kind of weird since I wasn't having a 'Lord of the Rings' marathon or re-reading any of the Harry Potter books. Why do wizards keep coming up?

I'll tell you why: because I like them. I like wizards a lot. And since I'm a talker, and I like things that I like, I tend to talk a lot about things I like. I talk about babies because I think they're adorable and I love them. I talk about drinking because I like cocktails. I talk about food because I like eating. See the pattern? So I guess I talk about wizards because I like them.

Things I like about wizards

1) Cool outfits. I'm a person who enjoys clothing. I mean, not just 'enjoying' in the practical sense like 'I enjoy wearing sweaters when it's 10 degrees outside because it's cold'. I mean that I enjoy clothing, like REALLY enjoy it...like a good piece of cheese or a scrumptuous piece of chocolate. I LOVE clothing and I love experimenting with it. I like trying new shirt/pant/skirt/legging/shoe/earring combinations-I LIVE FOR IT (I might be exaggerating). So, since I like experimenting with my personal fashion, I appreciate when other people I see are sporting rockin' outfits. I acknowledge the skill that it takes to create an ensemble. Wizards wear robes and hats. They have staffs that they strut around with. They look powerful and you know, because they're wearing robes, that they're super comfortable. What cool clothes! What cool wizards!
2) They're wise. As Rebecca pointed out to me, most wizards are really old. I think that Dumbledore, from Harry Potter (I know that all of you know where Dumbledore is from but I thought it would be funny to cite him), was around 500 years old. And other wizards, who I can't think of right now, have also been really old. With age comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes rock-star status. Since I'm young and naive and obviously don't know what I'm talking about (see previous blog entries and THIS blog entry...) I appreciate wisdom in others. Didn't Isaac D'Israeli once say:

"The wisdom of the wise, and the experience of ages, may be preserved by quotations."?

3) They're owned by Michael Jordan. I'm a sucker for Michael Jordan and basketball. Oh wait. That's a corny joke/a lie and the wrong kind of wizard(s)! Whoops!

4) They're funny. I mean mostly indirectly. Like who seriously waves a wand around? That's kind of ridiculous and therefore really funny. Also, because they're so wise, they're able to make backhanded comments about people without them even knowing it. Like, they can say to someone 'you're not the brightest bulb in the shed' and that person wouldn't even know they were calling them stupid. Except, they wouldn't say that...they would say some sassy wizard riddle. And yes I know it's not 'the brightest bulb in the shed'-pffffff. And no I can't think of any wizard riddles right now.

5) They're badass. Wizards don't care what anyone thinks about them. They fight for what they believe in. They wear long hair even when it's considered 'girly'. They tell jokes that are above everyone's heads. That's pretty punk and I like it.

Things I like about 'Harold and Maude'

I saw 'Harold and Maude' for the first time in 11th grade. I took a creative writing class in high school and every few weeks, to 'inspire us' (or because he was lazy...), my teacher showed us movies/tv shows. We watched SEVERAL episodes of 'Northern Exposure', 'Don't Throw Momma From The Train', some other things I can't remember, and 'Harold and Maude'.

Needless to say, as most of my classmates spent their time trying to figure out how they could get away with cursing in their stories (our teacher said it was ok to use 'BITCH' or 'ASS' or 'FUCK' if it contributed to our pieces' overall artistic value), I was one of the more mature students in the class.
Don't let my giggling/facebook grafitti pictures/this blog fool you. I am, kind of, mature.

Anyway, as mature was I was at 16, the whole point of 'Harold and Maude' was lost on me. I remember wondering why the hell Harold faked suicides...and why he was in love with an old lady. And, EW! Were they having sex? Why would he want to have sex with an old lady?

Well, 6 years later, after finishing college and working professionally for 6 months (I know 6 months isn't a long time but it FEELS like a long time to me! OK?! SHUTUP. Wait...didn't I just say that I was mature?), I rewatched 'Harold and Maude' on Sunday. And I really liked it. I think I got it this time. It's about love. And about two people understanding each other-regardless of their back grounds or gender or age.

I really like 'Harold and Maude'.

Things I like about 'Harold and Maude'

1) The two main characters are named Harold and Maude. What fun names! I don't think I've ever met anyone named Maude...so special and unique! My middle name is Estelle, so I identify with people whose names are out of the ordinary. I like movies with characters that I identify with. So, I like 'Harold and Maude'.

2) The soundtrack is really great. I never really listened to Cat Stevens before...but now I sure do! (No, I really do! Like...on the subway in the mornings. And when I'm putzing around my room...and stuff.) His songs are so upbeat and catchy...and the lyrics are really sweet. I'm a sucker for lyrics :)

So if you want to be high be high. And if you want to be low be low...doo doo deee dooooo

3) Maude's Jewish. At least...I think she is. She has a numbered tattoo on her arm, and is from Austira...leading a viewer (me) to believe that she was in a concentration camp at one time. And most people in concentration camps were Jews. I guess she could be a Gypsy or of Christian descent. She could also be a lesbian...but then the whole 'relationship with Harold'. Moving on, Maude's really optimistic and insightful. She teaches Harold to love and be happy with himself-how nice! So, if Maude really DID go to a concentration camp, and IS Jewish, and had to come to the US from Austria after fleeing persecution and is still able to be optimistic...that's great! YAY for the Jews and for Maude! Or, YAY for the Jews including Maude (since she is one)!

4) Harold. Harold's really funny...an indirect way. Like, he drives a Hearse. That's funny! Who does that? And, he's really creative. Planning all those fake suicides, decorating for Maude's birthday. I appreciate creativity/decorating ability in people, so KUDOS to Harold! You're tops!

5) The message. I think the message in 'Harold and Maude' is something like this:
It's possible to love, anyone, anywhere, at any time. And it's a great thing to share with people and learn how to love them and be loved in return. Don't they say something like that in 'Aladdin'? or 'Beauty and the Beast'?

Or, maybe this quote says it better:
"But I love you, Maude!"
"Oh Harold, that's great! Now go out and love some more!"

I really like this idea. I spend some of my time missing people and feeling sad that all my friends and family can't always be with me. BUT, MAYBE, I shouldn't be sad at all! And instead, I should be happy that I have so many people I care about and so many people I love. I should be happy that I have people to miss. And instead of feeling sorry for myself I should be grateful! Or something like that.

Thanks 'Harold and Maude' for putting everything in perspective for me!

Well, I got a lot off of my chest yesterday. It's nice to vent every once in a while (read: all the time), isn't it?
