Things I like about not having work

TOMORROW is a non-work day. That's right. YUP. It IS only Thursday and Memorial Day was LAST weekend and I STILL don't have work tomorrow.

How could that be?

Well, tomorrow is the Jewish holiday of Shavuot (when G-d gave the Torah to the Israelites...I think) and because I work at a Jewish place I don't have work.

YES!!!!!

Three day work weeks should be the new five day work week. No one actually works 40 hours a week, do they? I mean, besides me. I obviously do that. UM...

Things I like about not having work:
1) Sweat pants. YES! In my heart of hearts I am a little chubby girl who wears nothing but sweat pants and oversized t-shirts. On days that I don't have work, I get to revisit this inner child and wear and let her out to play. Forget 'dress codes' and 'the hr department'. Sweatpants are THE thing for non-work days.

(I found this pic. random)

2) Sleeping In. My body doesn't want to be up at 7 am. EVER. It doesn't matter if I go to bed at 7 pm and sleep 12 hours until 7 am. My body will still be annoyed at me and probably achy. On non-work days I don't have to get up at 7. I can sleep in and instead of feeling slightly tired during the day, I usually feel well rested.

3) Doing whatever the hell I want. Oh you know, maybe I'm hanging out with your mom or maybe I'm watching TV. Maybe I'm shopping and stimulating the economy. Maybe I'm stimulating your mom? It's really hard to say...but I will tell you one thing: On non-work days I am doing whatever the hell I want (whatever the hell that is). hell hell hell...I know, I don't normally curse in here. Or should I say 'cuss'?

4) Drinking. EH, this isn't necessarily true all the time...but sometimes it is. You dig?

5) Not being at work. It is so annoying there sometimes. People talk to you when you don't want them to. People give you crap to do when you don't feel like doing anything. And then, when you DO feel like doing something there's no work to be found. What is THAT about? It's like they get inside your head and find out exactly what you don't want and then give it to you. And then the phone's ringing and people leave crap on my desk and I don't have a window so I can't see outside. It's basically a lot of whine and cheese...and I'm lactose intolerant so...

Things I like about weddings

WOW, has memorial day come and gone already? I could probably have my own memorial day just to sit and muse about how memorial day was. Maybe I should do that. I have a few sick days I could use...*cough*...actually...maybe I am coming down with something...

Anyway, the big event during memorial day weekend, was my cousin Alex's wedding on Sunday night. The wedding, a 'black tie optional affair' (read: I got my dress at daffy's and it seemed to do right by me) started at 5 pm, had a cocktail hour (yes!), and a dance floor big enough for several people to boogie down.

I went into this wedding with an open mind. I haven't been to many weddings so I didn't really know what to expect. Was I going to get trashed? Would there be cute guys there? How would the band be? Would I shame myself in front of my family?

The answer to these questions in no particular order are:
1) not so much
2) yes
3) not too shabby
4) not really

All in all, it was a GREAT time and made me realize that I really LIKE going to weddings! Can you all get a move on it and tie the know if you haven't already? Oh, and invite me to the wedding!

Things I like about weddings:
1) An excuse to dress up. Sure, I kind of dress up Monday-Friday...but usually I'm secretly wearing sweat pants and they just LOOK like dress pants or I'm wearing a shirt that I slept in or the dress I'm sporting hasn't been washed in a few months. But at a wedding, you have to legitimately dress up. Sometimes, you even have to wear HEELS.

2) Cocktail hour. I like going to happy hour, but it's never really an hour is it? More often than not it's two or three hours...and then you're sitting there, checking your cell phone, trying to figure out how you can get out of there without being the 'lame' person. But at a wedding cocktails only last for ONE hour...so by the time you're feeling antsy/your vodka tonic just isn't doing it for you, it's over!

3) A meal with courses. I like to have meals with courses, but rarely do. What am I, a rockstar? Come on!

4) Dancing. And not just any kind of dancing, dancing with elderly family members! If that isn't universally fun and funny then I don't know what is!

5) Center pieces. I just like center pieces, ok? Every table could use a little decoration

6) Time with family. Etc. We don't get to do this too often...bla bla

7) Time with friends. Oh, I don't actually HAVE friends but hypothetically speaking...

Things I like about paper clips

I always think to myself "Becky, your blogs are too long."...and then I spin off to some other strand of thought...probably about what to wear to something.

Then I come back and I'm like 'Becky, maybe if your blogs were shorter you'd be more inclined to blog more often'...and then I'm gone...

The problem isn't that I don't have ideas. I have plenty of ideas. The problem is that I have ideas that I can't elaborate on. They're one or two sentences at most and that just seems...like...unimpressive, you know?

Let's try this one out:

Things I like about paper clips

1) Silver. I am a big fan of silver and always have been...even during the California Gold Rush of 1849 when it wasn't 'cool'.

(I typed 'I hate gold' into google image search and this was one of the results. um...anyone?)

2) Other colors. Sometimes paper clips are other colors, too. Like, um...this ONE time I saw a GREEN paper clip and it was so cool! I was like 'paperclip, stop it! you're not a blade of grass or a leaf or a leprechaun's coat! What are you doing being green?!'. And then another time I saw a PINK paper clip and I was like 'oh my gosh! you're not...um...a pepto bismol tablet paperclip! STOP TRYING TO HIDE! I'm going to use you whether you like it or not!'. And more of the same.

3) Hold things together. I know I have an opposable thumb that is hooked up to my brain, but sometimes it doesn't work so well and I need something to hold my shit together. When alcohol doesn't work, I've found that paperclips serve basically the same purpose. AND they do it well.

4) Fun to bend. I am not very strong. I can barely rip a piece of thread without having to rush to the hospital. I mean, don't get me wrong...I know girls aren't supposed to be strong. They're supposed to be pretty and good at baking and listen to whatever men around them have to say...and they probably shouldn't even go to college. But, it still is a blow to my ego when I find myself panting after trying to crush a soda can against my head (don't ask). I see people do this on TV all the time...why can't I?

Well, paperclips, unlike SODA cans (lame lame lame) are very easy to bend. When I am at my desk, bending paperclips into faux 'artsy' broches and rings I feel strong. And sometimes, regardless of what people say, that's a nice feeling to have.

Things I've been listening to lately

OH, and incase somehow, you've been living under a rock or were detained at Guantanamo Bay but just got back because Obama let you go or have been having an acid flashback or have been hibernating....

I've also been listening to the new Green Day album. GREEN DAY is back!

Things I've been listening to lately

Happy Monday!

For a little while, you might have noticed, if you actually stopped thinking about YOURSELF and CARED about me for just one tiny moment, that I fell into a bit of a music rut. I haven't gone to any shows in a while, and I was playing the same old songs on my ipod. My ipod was flipping me off in protest...practically refusing to turn on because it was bored with me.

But recently, I've been listening to some new things and I have to say, it's kind of exciting!!!

WOO!!!

Oh, wait. I mean it's kind of exciting for me, not for you. You probably don't like the same kind of music that I do, and you probably don't want to hear me talk about it. You don't give a @#$# if my ipod refuses to turn on (yours could turn on you too, you know...).

You might not even know me...in which case...how did you get here?! We don't want your kind reading this blog *motions with pitch fork*

Things I've been listening to lately:

1) Cobra Starship. I have liked them for a while, but I hadn't seen them in concert until last weekend. I have a slight infatuation with Gabe Saporta, the lead singer. Not that I'm one of those teeny boppers who only listens to a band because they're attractive. It's just that if Gabe wasn't attractive or slightly douchey (this could probably be considered 'attractive' because, let's face it, a little d.b. goes a long way) or Jewish...or good looking or hot then I wouldn't like this band. Wait...I don't mean that...eh hem...

songs to check out:
The Church of Hot Addiction
The City It At War
The World Has Its Shine (But I would Drop it On a Dime)

2) Young Love. YES! So, I started listening to them because pandora (you sly fox) shuffled them into a station I had created. And I liked the songs pandora (stop it! no YOU stop it! *giggle*) it was offering me. And then, somehow, they were playing last weekend and I saw them and...what a set! Catchy, dancy songs with a bit of an edge. Some might say it's exactly my cup-o-tea...and they'd...um...be right about that?

songs to check out:
Find a new way
Unafraid

3) New Found Glory. I have this habit of finding a song I like and listening to it on repeat...for...maybe a week (orinrealitythreeweeksbutshhhdontjudgeme). I try to listen to other songs during these phases but I always cycle back to the original song I'm 'crushing on' (for lack of a better term). That song for my right now is New Found Glory 'Right Where We Left Off'. ch-ch-check it out!

4) All Time Low. I can't decide if I should be embarassed about this or not. It's like when I did Israeli folk dancing with my mom in high school...I knew there was a fine line between being indy and being a big dork. Was israeli folk dancing cool or lame? Was I the next big thing or someone that was about to get shoved into a locker? Well, that's exactly how I feel about All Time Low. Are they too pop-punky and ridiculous, or are they legitimately a good band?

You tell me.

songs to check out:
Weightless
Dear Maria, Count Me In

5) Hey Monday. I mostly like bands with all guys (not because I'm sexist or don't like women, ok? save it) , but this band has a cool female singer and I dig. Do you?

songs to check out:
Homecoming
Candles

6) No Doubt. Again, Bamboozle bla bla bla. You've heard it all before. But you might not have heard this: I legitimately have a girl crush on Gwen Stefani. Those eyes, that smile, that voice, that spunk! I spend sleepless nights pondering: How does she get her hair to poof like that in the front without falling out of style? And how does she always look so cute all the time after giving birth? I wonder what she likes to do for fun?

I might be lying, but seriously...the crush remains.

songs to check out:
I'm Just a Girl
It's my life
Hella Good

*An aside-all of you have heard of 'No Doubt', right? Because I might have had a meeting with someone last week who didn't know who No Doubt was OR Gwen Stefani. He wasn't even foreign or anything...*

7) Ace Enders

I explained about the deep relationship Ace and I have in an earlier entry. HMM...does anyone know anything about tagging entries? I think that helps people find earlier entries that relate to certain subjects but like...uh...I don't know how to do that. Anyway, Ace and I were on the DL for a while but like most great loves all it took was a little awkard conversation to get us back on track. Now we are in love again and I am listening to him.

guess that it's for now kiddiez. TTFN (that means ta ta for now. why do I even bother...? :D)

8) The sound of construction on my street. You might not know this but a car driving over metal plates on the street actually sounds like pirates (too soon?) that are on a rampage/about to break in and steal your stuff.

9) The phone ringing.

10) Your voice

Some thoughts about raincoats

It's been raining a lot lately, hasn't it? I'm over stepping in puddles and having dirty city water on my feet. I don't want to have frizzy hair anymore, and I don't want to be wet when I'm not a) swimming or b) taking a shower (that's what she said). I don't want to frown at children and scare them because I'm unhappy that it's raining. And I hate carrying an umbrella.

Walking is hard enough for me as it is. I can be walking on a flat road, by myself, on a sunny day, not carrying anything and face plant...so imagine walking with an umbrella, when it's raining, and there are other people around, also carrying umbrellas. It's like some boring version of frogger that nobody wants to play.

TESTIFY!

That being said, I went to macy's last week, armed with a coupon, to pick up a rain coat . I figured I'd be able to find a nice rain coat...probably not at the LOWEST price ever but, again, you know, the whole 'coupon' thing so...

I love shopping and sales and being cheap, so I was pretty excited for my trip. But, when I finally made it up to where the raincoats are (8th floor at Herald's Square fyi), I was shocked.

I saw rack upon rack upon rack of...

coats. but where were all the rain coats? I saw some swishy looking pea coats and some sacks with zippers on them, but no real rain coats. I searched through different racks, examined tags and then I noticed something. Or rather, I didn't notice something that I wanted to be noticing:

Where were all the hoods at ?! Should I have called the police? The HOODS WERE MISSING!

Last time I checked I thought a rain coat HAD to have a hood? I mean, if it doesn't have a hood, and is button down...then it's just a trench coat, right? And, I already have a lightweight coat that I can use with an umbrella...I don't need to go out and buy another one. Contrary to popular belief my first name isn't actually "Money Bags".

I wasn't ready to give up my fight though. Sure, for every 1 old-lady-looking rain coat there were 10 other cute, young, "rain coats" without hoods...but I wasn't ready to compromise. I WANTED a rain coat with a hood. I have very special tastes apparently.

AN ASIDE: I just feel that if I'm going to spend money on a coat, to keep me dry in the rain, then I don't want to have spent money on an umbrella too. I like accessories (rings-<3 class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Umbrella AND raincoat-stfu! I am not good at multitasking! How many times do I have to scream that out loud before the world will begin to hear me?

Finally, after celebrating 5 birthdays at Macy's and becoming pregnant and starting a family there...I might be lying...I found a coat. It was a London Fog coat, blue, with a hood. Not too $$$ and it said that it shed water. I figured that was all I needed, right? I mean shedding water means that the coat won't hold on to water...and that's a good thing. I thought.

Flash forward to Sunday morning when I was outside all day at Bamboozle in the rain. I was still excited about meeting Ryan Gosling <3 When I noticed something...

MY CLOTHES WERE SOAKING WET! NO, I wasn't sweating. I was WET from the rain! I couldn't believe it! I had searched and found this raincoat! It was my needle in the hay stack of the macy's coat department! How could it have failed me?!

I almost cried. But then I sucked it up and went back to bopping along to The Ataris or whoever happened to be on the stage at the time (that detail doesn't really matter, ok?).

In conclusion:
1) I returned my rain coat to Macy's and they put the money right back on my credit card. EVEN though I'd already worn it!

2) Rain coats should ALWAYS have hoods on them.

3) The fact that some rain coats DON'T have hoods on them is annoying to me.

4) 'Sheds water' actually means 'absorbs water into your clothes'.

Things I saw over the weekend-Bamboozle edition

Hi Everyone! Well, what a weekend huh?!?!

Here I am, sitting at my work desk, sunburned (ow, it actually hurts...), tired...

But at least I'm sitting, right?

My 'dogs' were killing me yesterday. I can't even begin to tell you. I thought I might have to amputate...and can you imagine how awkward that would be in the spring and summer? How would I wear skirts? flip flops?

So anyway, the Bamboozle fest came and went. There were highs (No Doubt performing, for example) and lows (Being out in the rain all day yesterday...you know I hate getting wet!...for example).

Things I saw over the weekend-Bamboozle edition

1) Concerts! No Doubt! The Used! Taking Back Sunday! sum 41! New Found Glory! Fall Out Boy! Young Love! Oh, well, those are musical artists...who perform, you know, music? And when they perform their music it's called a concert. I know, this seems obvious but maybe some of you are really stupid ok? And like, you know...maybe we're all only as fast as my slowest reader...so I need to just be really obvious here.

2) Girls with hair straighteners. Yes, apparently it is now 'cool' or even 'common' to bring a hair straightener with you to a concert. WTF! This little teeny bopper was straightening her hair in the bathroom, as it poured outside because her hair just looked 'so f*ing ugly curly. no seriously you guys, it does'.

3) Barefoot people. So, people don't come to concerts barefoot do they? I mean, I wouldn't because that is really, really stupid. Like, REALLY stupid. Like, marrying a guy that you don't really know for a day and then marrying a guy that's already involved with someone else who's pregnant and then having two kids and showing your VA-JAY to everyone and shaving your head...eh hem.

That being said, there were a lot of people at Bamboozle who were walking around barefoot. EW. I can't even tell you how offensive that is to me on so many levels. Coupled with these hygiene-lacking-kids were...

4) People walking around with only one shoe. UM, this could possibly be even weirder and dumber than not having shoes at all. How do you LOSE a shoe?! Were you standing and did someone lift your leg up and slide it off without you knowing? Or, were you in a rush going out the door in the morning so you forgot the put the other one on? Or, as Jason pointed out, did you really hate a band and decide that instead of throwing a tomato at them you would chuck a shoe in their direction? It's a recession people! You have to hold on to your goods!

5) Ace Enders. I used to, and still do, but they're not currently together, like this band called The Early November. And, they came to play in DC when I was freshman at AU and I met Ace the lead singer of the band...and he's cute and all...so I had a big crush. Flash forward a few years later, and Jason is telling me about this CD by some 'band' named Ace Enders. 'No' I haven't heard of it. 'Oh well I just got it on sale...etc. etc.' 'Oh that's cool'...wait a second...ACE. ENDERS. It's his last name! AH! AH! HE HAS A SOLO CD?! OMG OMG OMG! HE'S DOING A SIGNING?!

So we went to the signing. Dialogue like this ensued:

Ace: Wow, that's a really cool shirt.
Becky: (looking down at pirate shirt) Oh thanks, that's just how I roll.
Ace: (to Jason) Your shirt's really cool too.
Becky: Yeah, we're kind of a big deal.

I shouldn't talk to people.

6) Ferris wheel. Yeah, they have some carnival rides and a ferris wheel at Bamboozle. I don't exactly get it but it probably has something to do with money.

7) RYAN GOSLING! I am 99% sure that I've actually told everyone this story already but suffice it to say if you ever want to get 'in' with a celebrity this should be your line:

Has anyone ever told you that you look like _________?

If they say yes, but don't go any further, be sure to follow up with:

Well are you _________?

It worked for me

8) Teenagers. GOD. TEENAGERS. I mean, does New Jersey have more teenagers than other states because I swear there were just teenagers everywhere!

9) Muffin tops. And no, I don't mean the edible kind.

10) Port-o-potties. SO. MANY. TOILETS.
