Things I like about 'Heroes'

Last night, my roommate and I finished our second to last episode of 'Heroes'. I'm almost at a loss for words...except I'm not. Because if I was really at a loss for words I wouldn't be writing. Anyway, yeah. I'm really sad. I like having 'Heroes' as part of my week day. Sitting at work, listening to silly people on the phone, dealing with silly people in person...it was all worth it, knowing that I could go home and sit in my apartment and put on an episode of 'Heroes'. No matter how bad my day was going, I had 'Heroes' to look forward to at night.

Well now, that happiness is gone. What show can possibly replace 'Heroes' and fill my evenings? Am I going to have to start LEAVING the house? or TALKING to people? or COOKING? I really hope not. I don't want to live my life. I want to watch other, fake people, live theirs.

In memory of the fun I've had watching 'Heroes' as I near the final episode, I'm going to make a list of things that I like about the show.

1) I like that many of the actors in 'Heroes' are very attractive. Do I really have to clarify here?

(Hot Indian scientist-and he's good with kids! )

(Poor Peter Pettrelli...he just can't catch a break.)

(The serial killer...men who are crazy are so attractive)

(A talented painter in the show! I love artists!)

2) I like that there are a lot of plot elements in 'Heroes'. Sometimes I have a hard time concentrating on things. Anyway, so last night I had this really delicious tomato and cheese omelette (true story) and then I didn't know what to have with it so I made a bag of popcorn (another true story. p.s. If you want to have good bag of microwave popcorn/a good laugh PLEASE buy Stop & Shop brand 'KaPop!' popcorn. Hehehe. What a funny name). But anyway, there are a lot of thick, juicy, plot lines on the show 'Heroes'. There's been the threat of a bomb, secret relatives, secret corporate allegiances, SUPER POWERS (the big/best plot element), international travel, time travel, funny/irrelevant dialogue-wow! For a while, I thought that I was too ADD (I call myself ADD but I'm not really...though I did just interrupt the sentence I was writing to point that out...) to enjoy "normal" TV. I thought I was destined to watch only reality TV shows. I imagined my life, 20 years from now, with my cats, watching reruns of 'American's Next Top Model' or 'Scott Baio is 45 and Single'. But now, I have bigger dreams for myself. Thanks 'Heroes'.

3) I like the funny dialogue in 'Heroes'. So, the show's not intentionally funny. Actually, it's a drama series. But some of the dialogue that the characters say is so ridiculous that you can't help but laugh! Take for example an exchange between Sylar and Mohinder (keep in mind that Sylar was about to KILL Mohinder):

Mohinder: Would you like some tea?
Sylar: sure.
**A few minutes later**
Sylar: Wow, this is really good, what is it chai?
Mohinder: Yes. My FAH-ther (he has a cool British accents) got it for me in India.

Isn't that funny? I mean, it has nothing to do with anything? I guess since I say a lot of random things I appreciate random words from other people (even if those words are scripted and those 'people' I'm watching are really just characters...and actually we have nothing in common).

4) I like the length of 'Heroes' episodes when they're on DVD. The show, when it's on TV, runs for an hour. But on DVD the episodes are approximately 45 minutes. 45 minutes is a nice amount of time. It's longer and more substantial than 24 minutes (which is how long 30 minute shows usually are on DVD), but leaves you with more free time than watching the show regularly. I mean, who has an HOUR of time? An HOUR? That's like 60 minutes! Or, 60+60 seconds! 45 minutes is the middle bowl of porridge-just right.

5) I like the character Hiro in 'Heroes'. I wasn't going to give him his own 'reason' but he's just so cute. Well...I like Hiro because he's so...cute. He has little eyes and does these exaggerated movements-he's like a comic book character except he actually IS a comic book character. So he's not like one. He is one. He speaks English without a Japanese accent, and Japanese without an English accent. He's trying to save the world. What a great character! His name is also HIRO and he's a Hero on 'Heroes'-whoever thought of that was a genius!

6) I like the shock value of 'Heroes'. So many people have been killed, to many political issues have been touched upon. I've covered my mouth with my hands so many times while watching. I'm constantly shocked when I watch 'Heroes' and I really like that. If you'd asked me to predict what would happen during the season after episode 1 I wouldn't have been able to tell you. And even though there's only 1 episode left I still can't tell you what's going to happen.

7) I like that 'Heroes' entertains me at work. Take for example the 'Which Heroes Character Are You?' quiz that I took a few weeks ago. So fun and so informative!

8) And lastly, because I sort of want to end this list, I like that 'Heroes' is so international. A lot of shows these days have mostly white casts with a token black character or token hispanic character. That's fine. And I really don't have a problem with 'Scrubs' (oh snap! see how I just made fun of 'Scrubs'? I have some friends that would be really pissed if they knew I did that...). But it's nice to have a show, like 'Heroes', with a real, diverse, ensemble, cast. There are Japanese characters in 'Heroes' (see above) and they speak REAL Japanese with subtitles, then there's 'The Haitian' (why doesn't he have a name?), Mohinder/his dad are Indian, Niki/Jessica and DL have an interracial half black/half white son, Micah. The cast is really diverse, and I like that.

FIN.
