Things I don't understand about Twitter

So, I signed up for twitter.com a few weeks ago. I didn't really have any interest in the site, but my friend Brandon added it and asked me if I'd add it too. When people ask me for things, most of the time, it makes me feel important and I'm therefore obliged to do whatever they ask me too. Seriously, I'm pretty vain...so if someone acknowledges that they need me I'm kind of all over it. You should try it sometime.

YOU: Becky, can you please slay a dragon for me?
ME: UM, sure. But you know, um...dragon's don't exist.
YOU: Oh, right. Yeah I know that. Well, I'm going to need you to create one and then slay it for me. OK?
ME: UM...
YOU: I REALLY need your help. You just seem so understanding and sensitive, I don't feel comfortable asking anyone else but you. Please Becky, can you help me?!
ME: SURE! YES! I'll do my best! I can probably have it for you in 5 minutes, ok? Or, I mean, if you really need it I can try to have it in four and a half. Is that ok?! Is it? Is it?!

Anyway, that being said...Brandon wanted me to sign up for twitter so I did.

Do any of you use it? I mean, do you like it if you do?

Things I don't understand about Twitter

1) The point of it. I mean, so...you update your status and let people, who are on the internet, who are supposedly your friends or at least people that you know/you know of, know what you're doing. I guess that's the point of it...but why? Why does someone need to know what I'm doing? Isn't twitter kind of like promoting a one-sided friendship? Hey, I'll let you know all the COOL things I'm up to via this website but actually, don't worry about contacting me or talking to me. Please, just track what I'm doing and maybe comment on what I'm doing. Or, don't even ASK me what I'm doing. I'll just TELL YOU all that I'm up to and you can just sit back and be amused or bored...or whatever you want.

2) How to reply to people. If you have people you're 'following' on twitter, and they write a status update that you want to comment on (something along the lines of '*anecdote about making pumpkin pie*' or '*I agree with your status update*' or '*You're awesome!*' you apparently can type '@' and their user name '@beckyisawesome' or something and then a little reply to their status will appear on their home page. BUT, I tried doing that and it didn't work.

3) Why use it? I guess this can go under the 'what's the point' rant I posted...but then this list would be too short and as we all know, size matters. But like, really. I have facebook, and I can update my status on there. And I have gmail, and I can update my status and CHAT with PEOPLE LIVE about my status...sooo...why do I need to let some people, who I'm probably facebook friends with and already chatting with on GMail what I'm doing right now? What's the point of it all?

4) Who is it for? So, if my friends already know what I'm doing, because I invite them to things or have talked to them about how I didn't invite THEM to something but invited my other, cooler friends...and if I talk to my friends and give them my opinions on political issues (because I understand that that's why some people use Twitter...or at least that's what Debbie said) on the phone or in e-mails...who am I trying to reach out to on Twitter? Who doesn't want to talk to me but wants to know what I'm doing? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

This rant is probably just because I don't know how to use the STUPID website...so maybe in the future, once I figure it out, I'll be back blogging about how I love it.

But in the meantime
TWITTER, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? absolutely nothing!

I just want to say that I did not say that. What I said was that I use it to get updates from political bloggers I like and cnn and so forth.

It is fairly easy to reply to people, and I can show you how to do it.

It is really more meant for people who have blackberries and iphones, not to be elitist, but like you just happen to end up at a bar, and want to let your friends know, so if they were in the neighborhood they could drop in. I don't really use it to often, but this is the idea behind it.

Wow, this is a really long comment, but I thought I would keep writing just to make it even longer.
